MCAT

Find the carbon methodology that fits your project.

MCAT compares your project against applicable carbon methodologies using a structured, evidence-based assessment of technical fit, eligibility, risk, cost, timeline and commercial viability.

For carbon project developers, consultants, project owners and investors

How it works
01

Describe your project

Tell MCAT about your activity, location, evidence and implementation context across a short structured intake.

02

MCAT assesses methodology fit

The engine screens applicable methodologies against technical, regulatory, risk and commercial criteria - it doesn't just search a list.

03

Review your assessment

See comparative scores, confidence levels, evidence gaps, risks and recommended next steps.

Why MCAT?

Methodology selection is more than a search exercise

Selecting a carbon methodology is often treated as a lookup - find the standard that covers your sector. In practice, the right choice depends on much more: your project's evidence, eligibility, monitoring requirements, implementation capacity, cost, timing, market requirements, risk, and expected carbon economics.

MCAT brings all of that into one structured, evidence-qualified assessment - not a methodology search engine, but a project-specific decision-support tool. It screens applicability and scores how well each candidate fits your project, rather than declaring one objectively "the best."

Tell us what you know about your project.
MCAT does the comparison.

MCAT applies a structured, evidence-qualified decision framework - it doesn't determine "the best" methodology, it screens applicability and scores how well each candidate fits the evidence you provide. Answer what you can; fields left blank lower the confidence rating on affected scores rather than blocking the assessment.

Have project documents already? Upload them and let MCAT pre-fill this form.
PDF, CSV, or Excel. You'll confirm every critical field before running the comparison - nothing submits automatically.
01

Project identification

Sector, location, and market context
This project type doesn't involve land tenure, so this tracks the equivalent operational dependency instead.
02

Technical fit

Data and monitoring capacity on hand
Three years of poor-quality data isn't necessarily stronger evidence than two years of well-verified data - this is tracked separately from how much data you have.
What each candidate methodology actually needs varies - one wants remote sensing, another wants direct metering, another wants field sampling. Check everything you have; MCAT compares this against each methodology's own stated monitoring approach individually, not a single generic match.
"Additionality" means showing the emissions reduction genuinely needs the carbon project to happen - that it wouldn't have occurred anyway without carbon finance or another form of intervention. Check whichever forms of evidence you already have; each is a different way registries accept as proof.
03

Sector diagnostic

Deeper evidence specific to the selected sector
This genuinely changes which methodology applies - a project-level unplanned-deforestation methodology cannot be used for a jurisdictional program, and vice versa.
Rice-paddy methane reduction is accounted for very differently from general cropland soil carbon sequestration - they use different methodologies.
Technology type genuinely changes which methodology applies - biomass-focused methodologies don't cover metered electric/induction devices, and vice versa.
Grid-connected, off-grid/mini-grid, and biomass energy projects sit under genuinely different methodologies with different baseline logic.
04

Risk profile

Reversal, leakage, and track record
05

Timeline & team

Bandwidth and expertise on hand
06

Costing & budgeting

Budget bands and financing stage
Operational implementation is kept separate from the MRV cycle budget above - it's the cost of actually executing what the methodology technically requires (permanent sample plots, biomass equation calibration, metering hardware, production-batch testing), not the cost of the verification/registry process itself.
07

Weighting

What matters most for this project
Total weight: 100%

Comparative matrix

Each core sample is one methodology, stacked in the same fixed order - technical fit at top, issuance potential at bottom - so bands line up for direct comparison.

Detailed report

Full breakdown per methodology, ranked by composite score, with concrete steps to improve fit.

Extend the MCAT methodology library

Add a methodology or methodology module that isn't currently included in the MCAT library - including implementation modules such as additionality tools, allometric equation sets, and monitoring tools - and use it in your project comparison. Uploaded methodologies join the comparison engine exactly like the 34 built-in records.

Add a methodology

Upload the core methodology document plus any supporting modules (PDF or text). MCAT extracts the text client-side for reference and makes a best-effort suggestion for a few fields from it - always review before saving. Everything below the upload is entered or confirmed by you; nothing is guessed for scoring-critical fields.
